Post laminectomy syndrome or failed back surgery syndrome is the continuation of pain and disability following traditional open back surgery. Typically, the original surgery does relieve the pain at first, however with time, patients suffer from recurrent disc herniations or scar tissue formation at the surgical site, which gradually causes increased pain once again.
