Facet Joint Radio Frequency Neurotomy

The facet joints (joints of the spine), are part of the bony portion of the spinal column connecting vertebral bodies, stabilizing the spine and allowing the spine to move. We use our spine and facet joints with practically every motion of our body, putting them at risk of degeneration. These joints may wear down, becoming arthritic and inflamed causing severe chronic back pain. With radiofrequency neurotomy, prolonged pain relief from facet joint arthritic pain can be achieved. This minimally invasive procedure, utilizes radio waves conducted through a small needle, directly to the affected nerve (innervating the diseased facet joint). During the procedure the patient will have sedation through an intravenous (IV) line, to alleviate any discomfort during the procedure. The physician will use a fluoroscope to position the needle in the targeted/affected nerve.
